Tory leader LIVE: Johnson’s team tells May to butt out of new US ambassador selection | Politics | News

Sir Kim Darroch resigned after a row erupted over his leaked emails which were critical of Donald Trump’s administration. But Mr Johnson’s backers have warned against Theresa May appointing the plum job in her last days as prime minister, the Daily Telegraph reported. It comes after the former foreign secretary refused to back Sir Kim in the Tory leadership TV debate on Tuesday.

Mr Johnson is the frontrunner in the race for Theresa May’s job.

It is up to Tory members to chose between him and his rival Jeremy Hunt.

The winner will be announced on July 23.

9.55am update: Rudd ‘accepts that no deal is part of the armoury’ for Johnson and Hunt

Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd has shifted her stance on a no-deal Brexit.

Ms Rudd, who is backing Mr Hunt, told Talk Radio: “Both candidates have said that no deal is part of the armoury in the negotiations going forward and I have accepted that.

“The situation is that we are leaving by the end of October but it would be so much better to get a deal.”

9.45am update: Hammond warning to Johnson over no-deal Brexit

Chancellor Philip Hammond has said he does not expect to serve in a Boris Johnson-led Cabinet and warned he would fight against a no-deal Brexit from the backbenches.

Mr Hammond told ITV’s Peston: “My expectation is that I will not be serving in the next administration.

“But, I want to say this because I read some stuff in the papers earlier this week about how I would be a nightmare on the backbenches.

“I will continue to argue vigorously against a no-deal Brexit.

“And I will certainly do everything I can to prevent a no-deal Brexit without parliamentary approval.”

Tory favourite Mr Johnson has vowed to leave the EU with or without a deal on October 31.
