Melania Trump: Why does the First Lady have a statue?

As the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump works closely with her husband, US President Donald Trump, 73.

There’s no disputing the 49-year-old has a big part to play, with her bio on the official White House website reading: “In her role as First Lady, Mrs. Trump focuses her time on the many issues affecting children. An unwavering characteristic of the First Lady is her aptitude for showing love and compassion in all that she does. Mrs. Trump spends much of her time meeting with children who are patients at hospitals and care centers.” (sic)

However, the former model had lots of people talking after a statue of her was unveiled, with many wondering what the point of the art work was.

Why does Melania have a statue?

The statue was created by US artist Brad Downey, who hired a local chainsaw artist, Alec Zupevc, to carve the design out of a tree trunk.

The tree sculpture depicts Melania wearing a blue dress and waving her left hand like she did at her husband Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration.

Mr Downey came up with the idea as part of a project exploring the First Lady’s Slovenian roots.

However, the work has caused quite a stir amongst the public, with many pointing out how dissimilar the wood carving looks to Melania.

Brad Downey is known for pulling pranks, which has led many to speculate the statue wasn’t made in Melania’s favour.

However, Downey insisted he’s a fan of the First Lady, and the statue was made to compliment Melania – who he believes is “absolutely beautiful”.

Speaking to AFP, he added: “I can understand why people might think that this falls short as a description of her physical appearance.”

Although Downey commissioned it, the statue is actually the handiwork of Ales “Maxi” Zupevc.

In a video produced by Downey, the artist – who works primarily as a pipe layer – seemed rather pleased to be given the opportunity to sculpt Melania.

He gushed: “I don’t know her personally, but she’s my age. We were both born in April. All the more reason to make the statue. Being born the same year, the same month.”

Where is the statue?

The statue, which was reportedly put up on July 6, is located just five miles from from Melania’s hometown in Sevnica, Slovenia.

Sevnica has already been well known with people around the world since Donald was elected as the US president in 2016.

Melania used to live in the village, and tourists often travel to the area to get an insight into her early years.

Residents of Sevnica have sold merchandise inspired by the First Lady, with products ranging from cake to slippers.

The art work comes after Melania made a major fashion faux pas during fourth of July celebrations.

Rocking a white Caroline Herrera dress with striped detailing, Melania showed off more than she bargained for, as her nipples showed through the white fabric.

Within seconds of photos emerging, fans flocked to Twitter, with many comparing her choice of clothing to a “wet shirt” contest.

Nevertheless, others were more complimentary of the First Lady, ignoring her fashion blunder as they praised her on her “stunning” looks.
