Chelsea tipped to fail in Europe because of three weaknesses ahead of Valencia clash | Football | Sport

Chelsea have been tipped to struggle in the Champions League by Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson.

The Blues begin their campaign in Europe by hosting Valencia at Stamford Bridge tonight.

Chelsea finished third in the Premier League and won the Europa League last season but could not strengthen in the summer due to a transfer ban.

And Thompson believes Frank Lampard’s side don’t have enough firepower or creativity while also having defensive vulnerabilities.

“They still have good players,” Thompson told Sporting Life.

“Whether they are going to be good enough offensively to score enough goals I am unsure.

“Chelsea are better than many clubs in Europe. Will they have enough firepower and creativity to go all the way? I don’t think so.

“There are vulnerabilities at the back for this team. It will be a difficult one, but Frank Lampard has known what he has had to work with, so he knows what to integrate into the team.

“Chelsea have not had the perfect start, but they performed extremely well against Liverpool in the Super Cup and the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United was not reflected in the scoreline, so it is not doom and gloom at Stamford Bridge.”

Lampard will manage in the Champions League for the first time after taking over as Chelsea boss in the summer.

The former midfielder was part of the Blues side that lifted the trophy in 2012.

But it’s the semi-final win over Liverpool in 2008 that sticks in Lampard’s mind.

Lampard said: “Without a doubt that was the most emotional moment.

“A very emotional night on a personal level. I didn’t need an extra bond with the Chelsea supporters and the club, but what happened on that night and with the fans in the stadium, on such a huge game for the club, it is something that kicked on everything about how I feel about this club.

“That is the magic of the Champions League.

“I will be proud to see my team run out in this competition. I had multiple incredible nights in the Champions League, and some bad ones. It is the ultimate in club football.”
