Brexit news: No 10 says a deal is ‘impossible’ after Boris’ phone call with Merkel | Politics | News

But Ms Merkel’s office has said it will not comment on “private” conversations.

The BBC’s Brussels correspondent Adam Fleming has said there was “scepticism” within the EU that Ms Merkel would have used that kind of language.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk sent a warning on Twitter to Mr Johnson yesterday which said the UK is playing a “stupid blame game”.

He also said the future of the EU and the UK is currently at stake.

He wrote: “Boris Johnson, what’s at stake is not winning some stupid blame game.

“At stake is the future of Europe and the UK as well as the security and interests of our people.

“You don’t want a deal, you don’t want an extension, you don’t want to revoke, quo vadis?”

With reaching a deal by October 31 looking more and more precarious, Mr Johnson and the Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar have said they hope to meet later in the week.

It comes as the phone call between Ms Merkel and Mr Johnson reignited tensions between the UK and the EU.

A No 10 source said that Ms Merkel said the only way for the UK to secure a deal was to leave Northern Ireland in a customs union.

This would also mean Northern Ireland has to permanently accept EU single market rules on trade in goods.

Germany’s approach appears to have shifted, according to the source, which has made a deal “essentially impossible”.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said the conversation between Mr Johnson and Ms Merkel had been “frank”.

He also said negotiations could not yet be ruled out.

Ally of the German Chancellor Norbert Rottgen said there was no new German position.

He said on Twitter: “There is no new German position on Brexit.

“Frankly a deal on the basis of Johnson’s proposals until Oct 31 has been unrealistic from the beginning and yet the EU has been willing to engage.

“Blaming others for the current situation is not fair play!”
