Following a cabinet meeting today, the government agreed the nation will enter into Tier 5 restrictions from midnight on Wednesday.

The restrictions will last for six weeks following recommendations from the Public Health Emergency Team.

The restrictions will be reviewed after four weeks.

Under this lockdown, bars and restaurants will be forced to close.

Hospitality venues will be able to serve takeaway.

Households will not be able to mix indoors, although they will be able to meet outdoors.

Schools will remain open and elite sports will also continue.

The country’s prime minister, Micheal Martin, is set to address the country today to confirm the lockdown.

It is unclear whether the government will restore the Pandemic Unemployment Payment to €350 (£318) a week.

The increase in restrictions comes as 1,031 new cases of coronavirus were reported by the Department of Health today.

No further deaths were reported.
