Michelle Obama sends Donald Trump touching message after coronavirus hospitalisation | World | News

Donald Trump and the First Lady, Melania Trump, tested positive for COVID-19 late on Thursday evening. President Obama said he hopes the Trumps are “on the path” to a quick recovery.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Obama posted: “Michelle and I hope that the President, First Lady, and all those affected by the coronavirus around the country are getting the care they need and are on the path to a speedy recovery.

“Obviously, we’re in the midst of a big political battle right now, and while there’s a lot at stake, let’s remember that we’re all Americans.

“We’re all human beings. And we want everyone to be healthy, no matter our party.”

Speaking at a fundraising event with vice presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, Mr Obama warned that the US is engaged in a “big political fight”.

He said: “Although we’re in the midst of a big political fight, and we take that very seriously, we also want to extend our best wishes to the president of the United States, the first lady.

“Michelle and I are hopeful that they and others that have been affected by Covid-19 around the country are getting the care that they need, that they are going to be on the path to a speedy recovery.

“We’re all Americans and we’re all human beings, and we want to make sure everybody is healthy.”

It comes after Mr Trump’s Democratic election competitor Joe Biden, and his wife Jill, also tweeted a message to the president earlier on Friday.

He tweeted: “I’m happy to report that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID. Thank you to everyone for your messages of concern.

“I hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands.”

Mr Biden’s running mate, Ms Harris, and her husband also shared their wishes for the Trumps.

Ms Harris tweeted soon after Mr Biden: “Doug and I join Joe Biden and Dr. Biden in wishing President Trump and the First Lady a full and speedy recovery.

“We’re keeping them and the entire Trump family in our thoughts.”

The messages of condolence came before President Trump was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday for a “few days” following advice from his doctors.

In a video tweeted by the president, he said: “I want to thank everybody for the tremendous support.

“I’m going to Walter Reed hospital. I think I’m doing very well but we’re going to make sure that things work out. The First Lady is doing very well. So thank you very much I appreciate it, I will never forget.”

Mr Trump is believed to be suffering with a mild fever.

His doctor said he “remains fatigued” but is in “good spirits”.
